Sometimes it feels like NRL teams are trying their hardest to stop us from covering them here on Rugby Shirt Watch. Many of the teams in the league stick rigidly to jersey designs for years at a time, and even when they do change, the variations are minor. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but when you’re a website writing about new rugby shirts… well… it’s less than ideal. With that in mind, we can’t help but be thankful for the Cowboys.
Every year North Queensland go to the effort of creating something new, something bold, and something a little bit different to what everyone else is doing, and we’re happy to say that it’s something that’s continued for 2018.
So we have a classic dark blue home shirt, this time with a huge set of horns – a nod to the Cowboys’ original logo from all the way back in 1995 – that runs across the entire shoulder section of the design.
That’s not all, however, as below the horns we also have another big flourish just below the horns, with a load of multi-coloured lightning bolts (which comprise the bottom half of the current Cowboys logo).
It’s a nice fusion of old and new, coming together to literally put the logo at the very heart of the design.
The away jersey keeps the same design, but white instead of dark blue, but the Cowboys logo segment is kept dark blue, making it stand out even more.
As is often the case with Cowboys designs of recent years, we think the change shirt is actually a bit nicer than the home, and allows the design to really stand out.
The Cowboys have always tried to mix things up with their jersey designs, and sometimes it works… but not always.
There’s nothing wrong with these shirts, but they’re a bit over the top and obvious to truly rank among the club’s best recent designs.
As a North Queensland Cowboys fan I have to admit to being a bit disappointed when I first saw this jersey. At first glance there really isn’t anything to it apart from an enlarged logo. It’s grown on me but I’m definitely looking forward to the next design period for the team. It really seems ISC took a less is more approach to this seasons NRL clubs, which isn’t a bad thing, it just seems to be heading down the road of Union jerseys.
Also there are a few similarities to ISC jersey template to the new Nike football templates with the detailing on the back of the collar.
