The Fiji Rugby Union have sent shockwaves through the rugby apparel world today by announcing a brand new kit deal with the world’s largest sportswear brand, Nike. The deal is without a doubt the most surprising and potentially exciting kit deals in recent years, and brings Nike back into the test rugby fold following the imminent end of their Argentina deal, here’s everything we know so far:

What are the terms of the Nike and Fiji kit deal?

The deal is a multi-year commitment between Fiji and Nike, with the US brand committed to supplying Fiji’s 15s and 7s teams until the end of the 2024 international season.

This is the first time that Nike has partnered with a Pacific Island nation. “Nike is synonymous with greatness,” said FRU CEO John O’Connor. “It will give me and all the millions of Fijian rugby fans around the world great pride to see the famous Swoosh on our jersey the next time our Men’s and Women’s teams run onto the field of play.”

What will the new Nike Fiji rugby kit look like?

While the new kits have not been launched yet, the training kit was revealed at the press conference today, which is Pacific blue.

While details of the kit are few and far between, the release indicates that the new Fiji kit will continue the recent trend of incorporating traditional Masi art that has made recent Fiji kits so striking and popular.

When will the new Fiji Nike rugby kits be launched?

The first Nike Fiji Sevens jersey will be launched ahead of its debut at the Oceana 7s at the end of June 2021.

The 15s kit is expected to be launched ahead of the Flying Fijians historic test against the All Blacks in July.

How can I buy the new Fiji Nike rugby kits?

In Fiji, the kits will be sold exclusively via Fijian retailer Tappoo, however the release indicates that the FRU recognises the global appeal of Fiji’s kits, so it’s expected that the kits will be available from global retailers.

Does this mean Nike is back in rugby?

Well, it’s certainly a positive step on an increasingly upward trend – with Saracens moving to Castore and Argentina set to switch to Canterbury, a few months ago it was looking like Toulouse were going to be the only team left wearing Nike in rugby union.

However, with the recent rumours that Nike is going to make a significant splash in the Top 14 next season, combined with this Fiji news, all mean that Nike will have more teams next season than they have since the early 2000s.
