The precise shade of gold of the Australia jersey has been a bone of some contention among fans in recent seasons, but now panel of former players, coaches and administrators has hopefully finally put the matter to bed by determining that the 1991 shade should be used going forward.

The launch of each new Wallaby jersey over the last few years has often brought complaints from traditionalists that the gold currently used by the ARU has been washed out, or too yellow, so a vote was held to whittle eight different iterations of the jersey shade down to one.

The vote, which absolutely wasn’t just a publicity stunt for the paint company that sponsored the whole thing, ahem, saw the shade worn during Australia’s victorious 1991 RWC campaign narrowly beat out the 1984 counterpart in the final round – the 1991 version had also won the public vote.

As a result, Australia kit supplier ASICS will now work with RA to ensure that the 2021 Wallabies and Wallaroos jerseys reflect this colour, and all Australia jerseys going forward.

ASICS Oceania Managing Director, Mark Brunton said: “It was great to be involved last night, and we’re excited to bring some heritage back into the Wallabies jersey.

“We have always designed our jerseys in consultation with the players from a performance point of view, but the 2021 strip will now be extra special.
