Newcastle Falcons have revealed the new jerseys that the club will wear as they mark their return to the Premiership, and the away shirt pays tribute to the club’s pre-processional identity as Gosforth RFC.
The home shirt sports some tonal black on black hoops mixed with light grey sleeves and collar, but the away shirt is something altogether more interesting.
Back in 1996, Sir John Hall made Newcastle Gosforth RFC the world’s first professional rugby club, and as part of a wider branding exercise changed the club’s colours to black and white to fit in with the Newcastle United FC, while also changing the club’s name to Falcons.
Black and white might be popular up north, but it did mean the rather nice colours that ‘Newcastle Gosforth‘ wore between 1990 and 95 – black, white and green hoops – passed into history.
Until now that is, with the new Falcons away shirt paying tribute to that period of the club’s history – and very nice it is too.
