The Dragons have revealed their 2020/21 home shirt, which for the second season in a row doesn’t feature any of the region’s traditional secondary colours – red and amber – for a gradated black chevron number that includes the heavy presence of grey once again.

It’s an interesting move for a variety of reasons, not least because the red and amber colours were always seen as a nod to the two clubs that merged to form the Dragons – Newport and Ebbw Vale. With the region now under full WRU control and trying to establish itself as a true region and not an extension of Newport RFC as it has often been regarded in Gwent, will we ever see these old club colours on a Dragons shirt again?

The new home shirt also sees the debut of a new main sponsor for the region, with Doom Bar taking the place of Monmouthshire Building Society on the front of the shirt (in a nice touch, youth jerseys will sport ‘Thank You NHS’ instead of the beer brand.

The away shirt has the same basic template, but instead of black we have a striking turquoise colour that has already drawn some toothpaste comparisons.

It continues the Dragons recent history of bold away shirts however, and will certainly have the team standing out from the crowd.
