The Queensland Reds have revealed their brand new Indigenous jersey, marking the eighth season that the Queensland Rugby Union has created a special jersey to celebrate indigenous culture.
The design, which is manufactured by new-for-2019 kit partner Dynasty Sports, was designed by local Wakka Wakka student Ayana Murray, who is a graduate of the QRU’s Future Indigenous Leaders Program, and current member of the Reds Generation Next programme.
The idea just popped into my head. This is my favourite piece I’ve painted,” said Ayana. “I’ve been painting since I was 10 years old. I painted with my grandmother who taught me everything.
“The ‘flowers’ represent the different communities of people. The lines in between are the path we travel. The big flower represents the Queensland Reds helping all of these communities and supporting them. The feet are from the koala which is the logo of the Reds.”
The jerseys were revealed by QRU Indigenous Program Ambassadors Moses Sorovi and Bryce Hegarty, and will be worn for this weekend’s Super Rugby game against the Jaguares in Suncorp Stadium.
