UPDATE: The new shirts have been revealed! Check them out here

The South African Super Rugby sides will apparently become the latest teams to go down the superhero rugby jersey route when the Sharks, Bulls, Lions and Stormers wear special Marvel Comics-themed third shirts for the 2019 Super Rugby Season.

The report, which originated with the Rapport newspaper in South Africa, is claiming that the four South African Super Rugby teams have struck a deal with Marvel and SA broadcaster SuperSport to create the jerseys, which it’s hoped will raise interest in the cross-border competition.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Marvel heroes on rugby shirts of course – the concept originated in the NRL, and later made its way to Super League, while the Rebels, Ospreys and Connacht have used the superhero concept in rugby union.

It’s not known which heroes will be featured yet, though Rapport speculates that the Sharks will fittingly wear a Black Panther-inspired design.
