Since Canterbury took over the Bath contract four seasons ago, you’d have been forgiven for thinking that, regardless of how unabashedly lovely their jerseys were, it didn’t seem like a partnership that was going to mess with the formula too much… well think again.
The 2018/19 home shirt sees Canterbury ditching the club’s classic blue, black and white hoops for the first time since they left Puma in 2012. Thankfully, however, what we have here is something much more interesting and, thankfully, absolutely gorgeous.
Instead of ditching the hoops entirely, we have a primarily blue shirt with thin black, blue and white hoops covering the shoulders, sleeves and chest.
It’s a look that reminds us of the home jersey Bath wore back in the halcyon early 90s when the club were the dominant force in English rugby, but with a cool, retro-modern twist.
The away shirt uses the same basic concept, with a white shirt accented by hoops across the top quarter, but this time we just have blue and white hoops, the blue ones accented by very classy black pinstripes.
Again, it’s a design that’s harking back to the club’s 90s golden era, but this time the white change shirt that the club wore between 1993 and 1996, notably for their 1996 Pilkington Cup victory over Leicester.
There’s not much to say about these shirts, really – because quite simply we think they’re gorgeous. They’re a radical departure from what Bath have been wearing for the last five or six seasons, while still tying into the club’s history, and feeling fresh and exciting at the same time. It’s a hell of a trick to pull off, but they’ve nailed it – and that’s why they’re some of the nicest shirts of the season.
