Ahead of the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 in San Francisco, New Zealand have revealed the Adidas jersey that both the All Blacks Sevens and Black Ferns Sevens will we wearing throughout the global showpiece (albeit without the main sponsor, of course).
Unsurprisingly of course, the jersey is primarily black, but unlike previous All Blacks Sevens jerseys over the years, this one has a fair bit more going on upon closer inspection.
The jersey, which Adidas has named ‘Dark Energy’ in typically melodramatic style features a prominent, intricate ‘energised fern’ pattern in dark grey sublimated all over the body of the design.
In addition, the jersey also features a new open collar design, which we first saw on the new Leinster training gear, and expect to see on the new full All Blacks jersey design.
Previous All Blacks Sevens designs have prominently featured the three stripes on the sleeves or shoulders, but the 2018 version keeps things much more subtle with the stripes only visible on the sleeve cuffs, and then in a barely noticeable dark grey.
The Rugby World Cup Sevens might not be as significant as it once was now that rugby is in the Olympics, but it’s still a huge moment for the game, and it’s no doubt that bringing the occasion to San Francisco will elevate it higher than ever before.
With that in mind it’s great that Adidas and the All Blacks are creating such an interesting and bespoke-feeling jersey for the Sevens, and it’s even better to see that Black Ferns fans will be able to buy their replica jersey for the first time.
