The Blitzboks have been the perennial nearly men of the World Rugby Sevens series – every year since 2012/15, South Africa have finished second in the overall standings. With high-profile 15s players Bryan Habana, Juan de Jongh and Francois Hougaard all in the squad this year, can they finally go one better? They’ll be doing so in some new ASICS jerseys…
The first Blitzbokke jerseys from ASICS were certainly unconventional – bringing neon green into the basic Springbok colour palette in an incredibly bold, modern design. It was exactly what a sevens jersey should be…
While the 2016 version lacks the ‘Jesus what the hell is that?!’ head-turning ability of last season’s design, it’s still a hugely striking jersey, and one that’s a bit more conventionally attractive to boot.
The neon green contrast colour has been kept of course, this time splashed across the front of the dark green shirt in an irregular, sharp-wave design that criss-crosses diagonally from top to bottom.
It’s not just a random pattern, however – look closer, and you’ll notice that hidden within this pattern is the outline of the Springbok badge, namely the logo’s head and neck.
The pattern on the jersey is slightly more obvious on the alternate shirt, where the pattern is set against the white, while the outline itself is rendered in dark-to-neon green.
We actually preferred the change shirt to the home last season, and once again it’s a close thing here. The change shirt is definitely a looker, too, though – we really like the way the dark green, and white work together, particularly with the pinstripes around the sleeves.
With an Olympics to prepare for in the summer, one tournament win under their belts already, and a genuine test superstar joining the squad for the Las Vegas Sevens in the shape of Bryan Habana, the Blitzboks shirt will be getting plenty of attention this year.
That’s not a bad thing at all – this is one of the nicest shirts on the World Sevens Series this year, and one that typifies exactly what a Sevens shirt should be. Bold, unconventional, and more than a little bit crazy. Nice.
